About Batik Tiga Negeri
Batik Tiga Negeri ("Three Regions Batik") is one of Indonesia's most prestigious and technically sophisticated batik traditions. Historically, a single cloth traveled between three renowned batik-producing regions, each contributing its signature color and expertise:
- Red from Lasem
- Blue from Pekalongan
- Sogan Brown from Solo
This remarkable collaborative process required extensive time, precision, and coordination among master artisans, making Batik Tiga Negeri one of the most luxurious and highly respected forms of Indonesian batik.
About Tjoa Siang Gwan
The Tjoa family is one of the most respected names in the history of Indonesian Peranakan batik. Through successive generations, the workshop became renowned for producing refined Batik Tiga Negeri distinguished by meticulous hand-drawn workmanship, elegant compositions, and harmonious coloration.
As a third-generation (G3) producer, Tjoa Siang Gwan continued this prestigious family tradition while maintaining the exceptional standards that have made Tjoa batik highly sought after by collectors, museums, and textile enthusiasts worldwide.
Craftsmanship
Every detail of this textile was created entirely by hand using the traditional Batik Tulis technique. The artisan carefully applies hot wax (malam) with a canting before the cloth undergoes repeated stages of dyeing and wax removal.
Producing a Batik Tiga Negeri requires extraordinary patience and precision, often taking several months to complete. The complex coloring process and intricate hand-drawn motifs result in a one-of-a-kind textile artwork that preserves generations of Indonesian cultural heritage.
Traditionally, batik cloth was worn as a jarik (waist wrapper) by both men and women in Java before Western-style clothing became widely adopted. Today, antique Batik Tiga Negeri textiles are treasured as collectible heirlooms, wearable art, elegant interior décor, and museum-quality cultural masterpieces.
